OpenAI wants Uncle Sam as a shareholder

Follow the money. OpenAI’s 5% government stake proposal would hand Washington equity worth roughly $42.6 billion against the lab’s ~$852 billion valuation. Altman wants rivals Google, Anthropic, xAI and Meta to contribute matching stakes, modeled on the Alaska Permanent Fund that pays dividends to residents. Any such arrangement would require an act of Congress. The leading lab is offering ownership where others spend on lobbying — equity, not access, is becoming the currency of AI policy.

The same instinct is reshaping the infrastructure layer. Meta’s compute business, dubbed Meta Compute, will rent out access to its AI compute and hosted models — part of the roughly $182.9 billion Meta committed to AI infrastructure as of Q1 2026. Led by Santosh Janardhan, Daniel Gross and Dina Powell McCormick, the unit would compete with three cloud incumbents — AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud — mirroring SpaceX and xAI turning spare compute into cash. When building the models gets this expensive, being the landlord looks like the better business.

For people building on that infrastructure, the math improved. Claude Sonnet 5, Anthropic’s most agentic Sonnet yet, launched at introductory pricing of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output through August 31, 2026 — rising to $3 / $15 after. It approaches flagship Opus 4.8 on agentic tasks at lower cost and became the default for all Free and Pro users on July 1. When frontier-grade agents run at $2 per million tokens, the constraint stops being the model and becomes what you build with it.
