Bezos bets against the GPU

The checks cleared. Two $500 million rounds landed this week, pointing in opposite directions.

The checks cleared. Two $500 million rounds landed this week, pointing in opposite directions. Supabase’s $500M round doubled its valuation to $10.5 billion in eight months, with AI tools now initiating over 60% of new database launches across nearly 10 million developers. The other bet runs the other way: Flourish’s brain-inspired chip, backed by Jeff Bezos at a $2.5 billion valuation, targets 20-50 watts. One scales the stack; one escapes it.

The research pipeline is tilting toward the physical world. CVPR 2026’s record submissions hit 16,092, up 24% over 2025, with 4,089 papers accepted. Embodied AI’s share of highlights more than doubled, from 2.9% to 6.2%, and vision-language work climbed from 4.9% to 10.6%. Industry is moving the same way: BYD’s humanoid robots confirm the world’s largest EV maker is entering robotics. The screen is no longer where AI lives.

The fight over who profits is widening. ChatGPT ads in the UK mark OpenAI’s first European market, extending a pilot that opened in the US in February to Free and Go users across a base of roughly 900 million weekly users. At the other pole, Sanders’ AI ownership bill proposes a one-time 50% equity stake in OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI, with Washington signaling openness to government stakes. Monetization and public ownership are now being debated at once.
