The middle layer got priced.

OpenRouter's $1.3B Series B reflects a growing market confidence in middle-layer AI infrastructure. As capital flows into this segment, regulatory moves in China show the stakes for talent and technology are rising.

Pricing the plumbing. OpenRouter’s $1.3B Series B, announced May 26, pulled $113 million from a CapitalG-led round that more than doubled the company’s valuation from roughly $547M last June. The router now moves 25 trillion tokens a week across 400+ models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI, and DeepSeek, with 8 million users wired in. Nvidia, ServiceNow, MongoDB, Snowflake, Databricks, Andreessen Horowitz, and Menlo Ventures all co-invested. The middle of the stack is being priced like a category.

The repricing isn’t isolated. Fireworks AI’s $15B talks, reported by Bloomberg on May 26, would mark a nearly 4x lift from the $4 billion valuation it set in October 2025 after a $250M Series C from Lightspeed, Index, and Evantic. The Redwood City inference shop processes 15 trillion tokens per day for enterprise customers and has raised more than $327 million since 2022. Two adjacent middle-layer plays quadrupled in months. The bid has moved from flagship models to the rails underneath them.

The capital story has a counterpart in policy. Beijing’s new travel curbs, reported by Bloomberg on May 26, now require government approval before founders, researchers, and executives at Alibaba and DeepSeek travel overseas, extending rules previously reserved for nuclear scientists and state-owned executives. The expansion builds on a quieter policy first applied to DeepSeek executives in December 2025 and follows China’s block of Meta’s bid for Manus. Two stated goals: prevent technology leakage and accelerate domestic capability. Capital prices middle-layer firms; this policy prices the people.
