The same day, Google’s Search overhaul pushed AI Overviews past 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode past 1 billion, with new Information Agents and Generative UI rolling out this summer. Google is answering the frontier race with reach, not just a leaderboard score.
The developer stack split two ways this week. GitHub’s internal-repo breach saw roughly 3,800 repositories exfiltrated after a poisoned VS Code extension compromised an employee device, with the source code listed on dark web forums for no less than $50,000; GitHub says it has found no impact on customer data. Meanwhile Anthropic’s MCP Tunnels and Self-Hosted Sandboxes, supporting 4 providers, keep agent execution inside the customer’s perimeter. One stack leaked through its tools; the other is being walled off.
The biggest dollar figure of the week wasn’t a model. NextEra’s $66.8B Dominion deal, announced May 18, would create a utility serving 10 million customer accounts with 110 GW of generation and a pipeline of more than 130 GW of large-load opportunities, with the deal slated to close in 12 to 18 months pending regulatory approval. Dominion’s Northern Virginia territory already powers AI campuses for Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Meta. AI power demand is now restructuring the regulated energy sector, one merger at a time.
