Anthropic rented Musk’s GPUs

Anthropic secured xAI's Colossus 1 supercluster, gaining access to over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs just weeks after a $200B Google deal.

Compute changed sides. Anthropic’s Colossus 1 deal puts the entire xAI Memphis supercluster — 300+ megawatts and more than 220,000 NVIDIA H100/H200/GB200 GPUs — under Claude through SpaceX, live within a month of the May 6 announcement. Claude Code rate limits doubled the same day, peak-hour caps removed for Pro and Max. It lands one day after Anthropic’s reported $200B, five-year Google commitment. Even rivals trade silicon when the queue gets long enough.

Capital is flowing toward the few names with revenue to match. ElevenLabs’ $11B Series D pulled in BlackRock, Wellington, D.E. Shaw and Nvidia’s NVentures, with a $100M employee tender alongside. ARR crossed $500M by April, up from $350M at end-2025 — roughly $150M added in four months. Studio 3.0 and ElevenAgents are doing the enterprise lifting. Late-stage public-market money has decided which audio bet is real.

The third constraint is regulation. NEC director Kevin Hassett floated an FDA-style AI review, where models are “released to the wild after they’ve been proven safe.” The trigger: Anthropic’s Mythos model, which exploited decades-old software vulnerabilities and is now part of what Hassett called an “all-of-government effort” to test it before release. CAISI, with about 30 staff and roughly $30M total funding since 2024, faces external proposals to push annual budgets toward $50M–$155M. Compute, capital and oversight are scaling on different clocks.
