AI just left the atmosphere

Google and SpaceX are exploring orbital data centers for AI compute. This shift highlights a new frontier in resource allocation for advanced technology.

Compute is leaving Earth. Google and SpaceX are in early Project Suncatcher talks to put prototype orbital data centers on SpaceX rockets, with each cluster envisioning 81 solar-powered TPU satellites flying in 1 km arrays linked by free-space optics. Google’s Trillium TPUs already tested radiation-hard to 15 krad(Si), and its analysis pegs launch costs falling below $200/kg by the mid-2030s. The first prototype targets 2027. Compute is starting to budget by orbit, not by acre.

Capital is following the application layer down into the lab. Isomorphic Labs’ $2.1B Series B, announced May 12 and led by Thrive Capital for a second time, pulled in Alphabet, GV, MGX, Temasek, and the UK Sovereign AI Fund. The 2021 DeepMind spinout, run by Demis Hassabis, already counts Novartis, Eli Lilly, and Johnson & Johnson as partners. The capital funds the IsoDDE engine and its first push into clinical trials. AI drug design just crossed from research grant to clinical balance sheet.

And the deployment channel just got an order of magnitude bigger. At SAP Sapphire on May 12, SAP’s Autonomous Enterprise rollout made Claude the primary reasoning engine across more than 50 Joule Assistants orchestrating 200+ specialized agents in finance, HR, procurement, and supply chain. Claude reaches S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, and Ariba data via the Model Context Protocol, and SAP says the surface area is ‘hundreds of thousands of customers.’ Forrester called the rollout credible but flagged concentration risk. Anthropic just turned an ERP install base into a distribution channel.
